Leor Grady
Leor Grady is an Israeli-born visual artist, living and working in Tel Aviv. He studied at SUNY Empire State College in New York, and the School of Visual Theater in Jerusalem. Working in a wide range of media—from sculpture, video, and drawing to traditional materials and techniques such as gold, embroidery, and even olive oil—Grady subversively repositions everyday objects, concepts and experiences, imbuing them with poetic meaning. By employing such a wide range of media, Grady’s conceptual works forms a visual language that is both fully committed to and independent from the history of art. This enables a powerful viewing experience, connecting tradition to intimacy, politics to poetics, and grandeur to the human body.

Grady’s works explore themes of home and identity politics, as his artistic voice is inscribed with traces of his own struggles with Israeli culture and history as a queer, Mizrahi Yemenite; addressing his traditional roots from within the context of contemporary artistic discourse. Grady’s cultural objects invite Israeli culture to recall its historical violence and erased histories, while simultaneously evoking fantasies of future histories that may yet be created: his works truly validate the argument that “the personal is political.”
Grady currently serves as head of the art department at Minshar School of Art in Tel Aviv, Israel. His work has been exhibited widely in Israel and abroad at such venues as the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C.; Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Ashdod Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi.
