This needle-felted hand puppet is a one-of-a-kind collectors’ item, a delicate work of fiber art. It portrays David Ben Gurion, the national founder of the State of Israel and its legendary first prime minister, sporting his signature hairstyle and eyebrows. Depicted in all his frail humanity, the piece provides us intimate access to this much-revered character; it is also a philosophical statement about the very nature of politics itself.
Materials: Needle-felted raw wool, glass eyes, textile body.
Dimensions: 20.4in tall x 3.9in wide, head circumference: 18.5in

These needle-felted hand puppets are one-of-a-kind collectors’ items, delicate works of fiber art. The series includes prominent Israeli and international political figures such as David Ben Gurion, Golda Meir, Queen Elizabeth of England, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, and Bernie Sanders. They are made in Burch’s signature needle felting technique, in which raw wool is sculpted with a special barbed needle, allowing the artist to transform the wool into a solid 3D material that can be molded into intricate textures and details. By employing this technique, Burch delves deeply into the puppets’ most intimate and fleeting facial expressions. Burch’s choice of subject—high-profile, powerful politicians—provides a stark contrast to the softness and expressivity of her materials and technique, enabling her to capture a unique, intimate perspective of these personalities that is not often seen: their wrinkles, their scars, a twitch in their eye. The familiar figures are empathetically portrayed by Burch in all their frail humanity. The fact that they are actual puppets enables them to be “played with” as such, providing us direct access to these much-revered characters; it is also a philosophical statement about the very nature of politics itself.

This puppet portrays David Ben Gurion, the national founder of the State of Israel and its legendary first prime minister. This work portrays him in his signature hairstyle and eyebrows, as he was during his most potent years—when his announcement of Israeli Independence launched the establishment of the new State. Ben Gurion wears a handmade wool suit, a white shirt and even sports a vintage Israeli tie.
